Founding Product Engineer (Forward Deployed)
Engineering, Full-time, Founding role, San Francisco, CA (onsite, with travel to customers), $140K to $200K
About Lane
Lane is building the financial infrastructure for the agentic web. Our mission is to turn intent into action: we give AI agents a dependable way to reach businesses, to prove who they act for, and to pay for what they buy. The first web was built for eyes and fingers; it was a library of documents. The second was built for apps; it was a set of walled gardens. We're building the third, a web built for agents.
Lane has two products. The Lane Wallet connects a person's own card to their agents and lets them approve what an agent buys. The Lane Index lets agents find businesses and their tools, then authenticate to them and pay for them, with agent auth and billing built in. We're a small team in San Francisco, and the people who join now take real ownership of the systems, the customers, and the company we become.
The Role
You'll be the engineer our customers know by name. You'll sit with the businesses and agent builders who integrate Lane, find what blocks them, and ship the fix, often the same week. Then you'll turn what you learned into product so the next customer doesn't need you.
This role is half building and half being in the room. You'll write production code across the stack, and you'll also run the integration call, build the demo, and tell the founders what customers actually need. The base salary range is $140K to $200K, plus competitive equity. We'll talk specifics during the process.
What You'll Work On
Customer integrations
Take businesses onto the Index and agent platforms onto the Wallet, from first call to live transactions. Embed with their engineers, write the glue, and debug the edge cases on both sides.
Product surfaces
Build the Wallet, where people approve what their agents buy, and the console where businesses list on the Index and set up agent auth and billing. Own the design details: the empty state, the error message, the second click.
Developer experience
Own our SDKs, MCP servers, API references, and quickstarts. Measure time to first transaction and make it shorter.
Demos and pilots
Build the reference integrations and demos that close deals. Make them real enough to run in production.
The feedback loop
Turn repeated customer requests into roadmap items with evidence. Write the brief, then help build it.
What We're Looking For
- 2+ years shipping full-stack web products, front end and back end (TypeScript, React, Node, or Python).
- You like working directly with customers. Forward-deployed, solutions engineering, startup, or founder experience is a plus.
- You can design an API other people build on, and you care when it's confusing.
- Comfort with AI agents and LLM tooling, and curiosity about how they break.
- High agency. You don't wait for a spec, and you know when to ask.
- Clear writing, and calm under pressure on a customer call.
Nice to Have
- Experience with MCP, OAuth, or agent frameworks.
- Payments, checkout, or commerce integrations (Shopify, processors, marketplaces).
- A product you built and launched yourself.
